As Fall Rolls Around

Aug 15, 2019

Well that came quick, harvest is just around the corner! You have made a lot of decisions this year to get your crops to where they are now. However, we know there are more decisions and planning to come to ensure a sccessful 2020 season.
A few things to keep in mind as the next months approach:

BURN DOWN
There are many options when it comes to a burndown application. All of the product names and premixes is overwhelming. One thing you should be sure of is a herbicide combination that will do a great job controlling your weeds without hurting your next crop. Take a look at last year, did you do a burndown? if so, what worked and what didn't? Were there any consequences if you didn't do a fall burndown? What weeds were most prevalent in your fields this year? Answering these questions can help you sort through what herbicides would work best for your operation.

GRAIN PROTECTANT
Insects are so pesty! You work all year to keep pests from invading your crops in the fields and it doens't even end at harvest. Grain protectants such as Actellic 5E and Dryacide 100 can help deter insects. However, acceptable grain moisture content levels at storage is essential as well. Grain protectant failure is most commonly due to moisture and temp. It is recommended to not treat grains with a higher moisture than 13%, or higher temp then 90 degrees.

FALL FERTILIZER PLANNING
It is a great time to plan out your fertilizer needs. Nutrient removal can vary based on soil conditions, yields, product differences, and fertilizer rates. Soil tests taken this spring or after harvest can help give you an idea on where you're at and where you should be.  Here is your local University fertilizer recommendations from NDSU and The U of M. Consult with your agronomist to go over your operation’s specific recommendations.
